I am a story-loving reader, I like suspense, action, drama, and more and somewhere someone said this book is not story-like. It is a book filled with rules, and if you are like me, rules can seem boring HOWEVER, these aren’t just any rules, these are rules spoken from the Lord to Moses. So as I begin reading Leviticus, I wanted to make sure that I am being intentional and not think of it as ordinary. I think you should join me in reading Leviticus as well!

Some background of Leviticus

• The author is believed to be Moses.
• It is for the Levites, they were the priesthood
• Written between 1445 BC-1440 BC after the Lord freed the Israelites from Egypt
• The purpose is to set guidelines for Holiness for the Israelites
• We learn that sin is destructive for believers

Although it is the Old Testament, it is still relevant today. God desires His people to be holy and set apart. Living in the light leaving the darkness. Although we do not sacrifice today like they did, it is a foreshadowing of the Ultimate Sacrifice that was made when Jesus died on the cross for our sins, rising with all power.

The Laws

Apodictit encompasses absolute general commands rendered from “on high” as “thou shall not’s” and as such has little application in the courts. The Ten Commandments are a prime example of apodictic law. (Times-Republican)

Causistic are conditional laws, for example, if/then if you do this, then this will happen

These themes are prevalent when reading Leviticus

• Holiness- Separation between saints and sinners
• Sacrifice- Physical elements of worship to a deity to express devotion, thanksgiving, and forgiveness
• Atonement- A price to pay to right the wrongs, reconciliation
• Priesthood- Aaronic Line And Livi, they make atonement on behalf of the people. Jesus made the final atonement
• Redemption-To pay a price in order to secure the release of something or someone

The Big Idea of Leviticus

Leviticus 19:2 “Give the following instructions to the entire community of Israel. You must be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy.“
