Church Hurt! I Tried Running Away From God

Church hurt is real, there are hurting people in the church that need help but still, those hurting people will hurt others. So I decided to run.

I spent most of my life in the church. My family, grandparents, and great-grandparents were serious about their relationship with God. There was no choice but to go to church. I was in every ministry growing up, everyone knew little Cicely. As soon as I hit college, things began to shift. This was the first time I tried running away from God.

Being pretty much sheltered my entire life and then experiencing freedom made me want to explore what the world had to offer. I traveled, enjoyed life and kept God in my back pocket for emergencies. I grew up a little bit and found myself “doing” church again. I got married to a minister, and it went downhill again.

Later I realized I just never knew the Lord for myself, I was living off of other’s prayers and faith.

Study the Bible LIke in English Class

As an English teacher, reading and diving deep into passages was my thing. I wanted the students to grasp literary techniques, the author’s purpose, and themes, and to make personal connections. I wanted them to visualize what was being said, think about the whys, and to go deeper beyond the literal meaning.
