Slow Habits For The Busy Person + Prompts

Are you looking for a way to slow down life? Here are 7 Slow Habits to implement.

I recently shared that I was forced to slow down, I was gifted with time which is a blessing. Now I have embraced it because it has been healing. Read about it here. So you are probably not like me where you have a busy life and you might think that you cannot implement slow habits, but I am here to tell you otherwise.

I am grateful for the force because I had no idea how much my body, mind, and spirit were suffering. You may not notice it either, but the busy life takes a toll on your overall well-being making you feel as if you cannot keep up, exhaustion, frustration, anxiety, all of that!

The slow life gives us time and forces us to live in the moment, and let’s be honest, a life filled with events, works, tasks, and more makes us live by a calendar leaving very little room to recollect. One of my biggest fears is waking up and not knowing where the time went, and the memories I have are of my calendar alerting me of what is next.

Here are 7 Ways To Implement Slow Habits for the Busy Person

  • DO NOT DISTURB– One of my favorite things to do when I go to a hotel is put that Do Not Disturb sign on the door. It means that I am in my element and I need to protect whatever is going on without distractions. So why not do that in your daily life. My iPhone allows me to create profiles to limit my notifications. If you do not have that, turn your phone off, hide it… and everything else that notifies you. So, add these moments maybe 20 mins- to an hour to not be disturbed. You can use that time for prayer, journaling, creating, and more!
  • Cook From Scratch– and not just a simple meal but one that takes time. Enjoy cutting the veggies, , watch the water boil, and take in the steam. Don’t rush the process, yes you might be hungry, but just go slow
  • Eat Slow– So now that your meal is cooked, sit down to eat, no tv!!! Turn on slow music. Take small bites and chew slowly, allowing the flavors to paint your mouth. This one is for me, I eat so fast and usually stand or work while eating. That definitely is not the slow life.
  • Go With The Flow-Maybe you can’t do this when you are on the clock, but maybe on the weekends, allow sound to be quiet to hear what you should do or who to connect with. As a Christian, I say yes to God daily and ask Him to guide my footsteps. When you allow God to lead, it takes so much stress off of you. Lately, God has been telling me to be still in quietness, and when I am still, I have the desire to create so, that is what I have been doing. If something you had planned to do and everything in you is saying no, do not force it.
  • Journal/Reflect– This has become a healing space for me, writing and getting my thoughts out. One of the reasons I write things down or record them is so that I can always go back to reflect on them and see growth or if my thoughts changed. So journaling itself is healing but when you take time to reread it and then plan from it, takes it to another level.
  • Move Sis Move– Dance, walk, exercise, etc get your body moving. Try not to rush the process because then that is not slow living. Do it until you feel complete! Last night I danced to a song for maybe 2 minutes, I lived in that moment, smiled, and felt amazing. And that is all that I needed at that moment. I let my body feel the beat, I swayed back and forth, and I even watched myself in the mirror!
  • Pray and Study the Word– This habit has done so much for me mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and even physically. I am a rush reader, I am a professional skimmer and one thing I was convicted of was rushing the word. So, I make sure that I complete it fully whether it be 30 minutes or 3 hours I make sure to reread if I find myself moving fast or skipping words/lines. I pray and study in the morning to help me set the tone for the rest of the day.

There are many more ways to implement slow habits into your lifestyle without completely living slowly. The slow life really is a mentality, your brain is always going, and creating habits to slow your mind will be a huge and positive lifestyle change!
